2008 ESCAPE THE ROCK WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Council Rock South High School
Holland, PA
The Council Rock South Wrestling Booster Club is proud to present the third annual Escape the Rock Wrestling Tournament, a 24 team, individual competition, with the top eight wrestlers in each weight class receiving awards. This includes a custom Championship Belt for the winner of each weight class. We are happy to have Kennedy Industries, Brute Wrestling and NHSCA aboard, as they join the many local businesses as event sponsors. Wrestling is set to begin at 3pm on Friday, January 4, 2008, with the finals scheduled for 6pm on Saturday, January 5, 2008. Many college coaches will be in attendance, including Virginia Tech Hokies Head Coach, Kevin Dresser, as he will be presenting our awards.
Our inaugural event in December of 2005 was a 10 team, dual meet tournament that culminated with the perennial Pennsylvania state powerhouse Easton Red Rovers downing the host Council Rock South Golden Hawks 37-24 in what was a very exciting final. Last year, the event was expanded to 24 teams and became an individual tournament. Paulsboro and Council Rock South waged a great battle for team honors with the hosts coming out on top. Connor McDonald from Sussex Central was voted the Outstanding Wrestler after a very impressive performance with 1 fall and 3 technical falls on his way to the 119 pound title, while Paulsboro’s rugged heavyweight Demetrius Hester earned the Most Falls Award by pinning all 4 of his opponents. The 2007 tournament featured many wrestlers who earned 2007 post-season accolades, including 7 state champions and 40 state place winners. Many of the teams also enjoyed post-season success in 2007. In Pennsylvania, Council Rock South were district champions, as were Hazelton and McDowell. Middletown and Bethlehem Catholic were the runner-ups in their districts. Across the river in New Jersey, Paulsboro won yet another state dual title. Down in Delaware, Hodgson Vo Tech were conference champions and Sussex Central took runner up honors in their conference tournament.
This year’s tournament has attracted some top teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Virginia. Newcomers this year include an up and coming Lenape Valley Regional squad from northern New Jersey, perennial Virginia state power Great Bridge and National Prep Tournament runner-up Wyoming Seminary from PA. There are many returning state qualifiers and place winners scheduled to compete, including the following who are currently ranked nationally by WIN magazine: Council Rock South’s Mark Rappo (#11 at 112), Big Spring’s Mallie Shuster (#12 at 145) and Hazleton’s Nate Eachus (#14 at 189). Wyoming Seminary is #13 as a team and has two individuals ranked in Nicky Gordon (#18 at 125) and Joe McMullan (#20 at 215).
